DEAREST READERS!
Since the Austrian ministry for cultural affairs decided to reduce its investment in this project to almost nothing, and the city of Vienna recently announced its decision to stop financing corpus in 2012, the situation has become precarious for us. Until we find ourselves with better support, the corpusEditors will further focus on translating just a selection of our material.

Nevertheless enjoy corpus, this bastard, this hybrid between art and media! And, in the following, learn a bit more about what this website is.

1. Title / Place / Language

The title corpus alludes to the formulation of a "body of meaning" by the French philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy. The address www.corpusweb.net contains the idea of intensive linking (...web...) within the site and a dense, purposeful network towards "outside" (...net). corpus is created in Vienna – and wherever our authors work. From there, it translates itself into the superlocation of the World Wide Web.

The magazine was mainly in German, although texts we received in English were published in their original language, too, and some contributions we deemed important translated either into German or English. Since last year's financial means allowed us to do so, we are now able to present corpus in two languages. In the future, there will be more translations of interesting articles – of course, according to our funds. Naturally, all texts published on corpus are original contributions if not explicitly stated otherwise.

Currently corpus is financed by a basic budget from the culture department of the city of Vienna / MA7 and the Austrian Ministry of Education, Art and Culture. Apart from that, Tanzplan Deutschland, an initiative of the federation's culture foundation included corpus in its publication support (2007-2010). And we got sponsoring money from the Erste Bank Group. Thanks very much!

2. Structure / SITEMAP

At first glance the headings FINGER, SPINE, TONGUE, SHOE and ROCKET may seem a bit peculiar; but on the one hand they lead away from the stereotype formulations of information websites, while on the other hand they already disclose what corpus is about.

The FINGER with its symbolism of indexicality and of writing contains works on theory and politics, futhermore literature recommendations as well as our extensive theme Education Moves.

SPINE harbours the primary moments of thought and lexicality – wherefore it leads to our interviews and portraits as well as the the new category history. Moreover, you will find here a collection of texts on Merce Cunningham – quasi an extended portrait.

The TONGUE is associated with language, expression and connection, so that we fill this category with our focus themes, analyses & reviews, and thoughts on enabling and publishing art by curatorship.

And then the SHOE, the object and its handling, the technique and learning, retrieving the other and the cultivation of hospitality. Here you will not only find our department techné with contributions about body techniques, but also the gallery and links to various corpus projects; and finally, the section future field in which corpus instigates the co-operation with and development of young choreographers, dancers and authors in various formats.

And we also have a MEMORY in which we store the overflow from all the other sections.

This anagrammatical anatomy is complemented by the artistic project ROCKET which lets images and texts spark like flashes of inspiration through the body of corpus, so that we may answer our own startled question: "What's that?" – Of course: an autonomous zone of artistic discourse.

3. Content

An annotation: the corpus editing team programmatically accepts the writing peculiarities of its authors' contributions. Therefore, there may be articles written in "American" as well as in “British” English.
