FREY FAUST: C-STAR, BEGINNERS. OBSERVED
By Lieve De Pourcq
the day of observation
people on the floor
are gathering around frey and listening
a knee injury caused him to reinvent his dance principles
he questions the position of the teacher
he believes in a democratic process
is this possible if one is in a teaching position? the other one in a learning position?
critical thinking is not encouraged in dance
you learn through copying
he wants to open up the discussion
and give the opportunity to question him
his way of teaching is often about chaos
there is neither a regular warm-up nor a warm-down
so much talking! are they still going to move today? yeah, finally they get up off the floor!
they start shaking, trembling
running in a duck-like manner
slowly, concentrating
there is time to explain
and try out
the group moves in a circular fashion
they concentrate on
feeling the weight
gravity
body mechanisms
rolling down
reaching the floor
although this class is ultra-slow, this seems like a class i could also benefit from!
they work a lot independently
trying out themselves
repeating on their own
faster
frey is walking the room
giving feedback
they cross the floor
improvising with the material
damn, they do stuff i never would have thought of!
they cross the space
they keep crossing the space
and again they cross
so then cross once more
and
so on
the energy stays very calm and loose
people work in their own way and tempo
frey keeps giving additions to the movement material
standing on the outside of the foot
think of knee-foot alignment
joint integrity
it's quite boring to look at, but i can imagine that for real beginners this is the perfect introduction to contemporary dance. they get time to digest and let their body adapt to the movement vocabulary. the material is not too challenging, but defined enough to enjoy working on the details and refinement of the movement. therefore the people with dance experience seem to learn a lot as well and get the opportunity to dig deep.
they start working in pairs
one doing, one observing
they watch and correct
their partner
and
teach each other
